UN ENCUENTRO ALUCINANTE

Hace apenas un par de semanas me encontré, de manera casual, con un viejo amigo. Yo caminaba por un parque cercano a casa. Vi un banco y se me ocurrió la idea de sentarme en éste y disfrutar un poco del paisaje, la suave brisa y la esplendorosa tarde. Varias personas pasaron cerca solos y en parejas cuando un hombre se detuvo frente a mí y me miró como alguien que quiere cerciorarse de la identidad de otro. Hasta ese momento no había reparado en su presencia, pensativo mirando el cielo. Pronunció mi nombre y fijé la vista en él. No lo reconocí de inmediato. Tenía barba, bigote y unas gafas enormes. Quedó estático unos segundos a la espera de mi reacción. Al fin lo reconocí. Me puse de pie y nos dimos un fuerte abrazo.

Habían transcurrido, por lo menos, diez años sin vernos. Después, del primer intercambio de preguntas y comentarios formales, ya sentados ambos en el banco, dijo:

—No has cambiado mucho en estos años.

Sonreí. Fue una reacción espontánea porque no pude responder de la misma manera sobre él, a quien el tiempo sí dejó sus huellas. 

—Trato de ignorar los problemas y sanar las heridas con rapidez. Creo que es la única vía escapatoria de los problemas actuales —repuse finalmente.

Me miró pensativo. Él siempre fue un analítico del clima político y económico imperantes en los distintos tiempos en que le tocó vivir. Yo, todo lo contrario. Solamente me preocupaba buscarme el sustento y entretenerme de un modo sano y sin muchas expectativas. 

—Supongo que recordarás cuando hablábamos de los extraterrestres, platillos voladores y de toda esa mierda en nuestros años mozos. 

Asentí. Luego, al notar su silencio, dije:

—Sí, mucho se hablaba en aquellos tiempos de eso y ahora creo que mucho más. Aunque no creo que haya motivos para tanto.

Él parecía haber quedado absorto como si no estuviera allí, sentado junto a mí en un banco del parque.

—Según percibo, tú todavía crees en todos esos cuentos. Puro alarmismo sin  un fundamento sólido —afirmé.

Su mirada se tornó irónica y con cierta carga de demencia.

—Veo que los años te han obstruido la vision y, discúlpame, también el entendimiento de la verdadera realidad que nos rodea.

Lo miré con extrañeza y escepticismo.

—En aquellos tiempos de nuestra juventud e inocencia, los extraterrestres eran vistos y percibidos como seres de ciencia ficción. 

—¿Y ahora no? —dije.

Sonrió. 

—Ahora. Ahora son tan reales que no reconocerlos es tener una venda en los ojos, padecer de sordera o de una ingenuidad suprema.

Sacudí la cabeza, aturdido. Pensé estar junto a un hombre que padecía de alucinaciones o de otros trastornos mentales aún peores.

Pensé simular estar interesado en su “fascinante” descubrimiento, invisible para mí.  Me acomodé en el banco a la espera de sus próximas palabras que, sin lugar a dudas, habrían de incinerar mi ignorancia. 

—¿Has oído hablar alguna vez de la antimateria? 

Salté en el asiento. La situación se tornaba difícil. Mi viejo amigo había perdido la razón. ¿Antimateria? Estaba totalmente ido de la realidad. Lo mejor era seguirle el juego.

—Sí, he oído hablar sobre eso. Aunque para mí eso es pura ficción, ciencia ficción. 

—Hoy, aunque lo dudes, la existencia de la antimateria es aceptada por la mayoría de los científicos del mundo. Es un hecho.

Asentí, en mi pose de seguirle la corriente.

—En esto, en la antimateria, radica todo —dijo.

¿Todo?, expresé, alarmado.

—Sí, todo. Absolutamente todo. Todos los problemas que afectan al mundo actualmente son causados por la antimateria. 

Lo miré estupefacto. Mi amigo había perdido la cabeza. ¿Qué rayos tenía que ver una cosa con otra? No tenía sentido.

—Me miras como si yo estuviera loco. Locos, por no categorizarlos de peor manera, son aquellos que viven de espalda a la realidad. 

Sacudí la cabeza y desvié la mirada al cielo en una pose escéptica.

—Pues sí, como te digo —volvió a la carga—. Nada más tienes que ir al núcleo, la esencia de su definición. 

Me miró como si yo fuera un ignorante, un ente encefálico. Me encogí de hombros.

—Antimateria es un material compuesto por las llamadas partículas. Se cree, y muchos científicos afirman, que cada partícula conocida posee un compañero de antimateria. Un doble, pero con carga opuesta.

Ahora sí que me dejó en las nubes.  Miré el cielo en busca de mi doble. Pero solamente encontré nubes, nubes entre nubes.

—Es decir, te explicaré con ejemplos entendibles: un electrón, como debes saber, tiene una carga negativa. Pero, su antipartícula, llamada positrón, tiene la misma masa pero con una carga positiva.

Abrí los brazos en un gesto claro de escepticismo. 

—Cuando estas partículas se encuentran, se aniquilan mutuamente y se convierten en un destello de luz.

Me rasqué la cabeza, ya en estado incandescente. 

—¿Y qué tiene que ver eso con nuestra vida, la vida de nosotros los humanos? —dije finalmente.

—Todo.

—No veo la conexión de ese concepto de la física con nuestra vida.

Sonrió por primera vez, mirándome con indulgencia. 

—El problema es que cada uno de nosotros, según he concluido yo después de armar el rompecabezas, tiene su doble.

Ahora sí que me dejó en el polvo. Polvo cósmico, supuse. 

—Nosotros, como todas las cosas, estamos hechos de partículas. Somos una partícula a escala mayor. Y tú seguramente te preguntarás: ¿Y dónde están nuestros dobles, nuestra partículas gemelas?

Me encogí de hombros.

—Pues no tan lejos. Ésos están aquí entre nosotros. Conviven con nosotros.

Ahora sí que me dejó totalmente en el polvo y con el ojo cuadrado.

—Físicamente son difíciles de identificar, aunque yo los descifro por sus ojos.

Hizo una pausa y echó una ojeada a nuestro alrededor como si temiera que alguien, tal vez uno de esos seres lo estuviera espiando.

—Se les puede identificar con facilidad por el lenguaje y sus acciones.

Fruncí el ceño, cada vez más alarmado.

—Éstos ponen todo patas arriba. La verdad de siglos, la cuestionan y terminan negándola. No, oye primero antes de emitir una opinión —dijo con un brillo extraño en sus ojos.

Cerré la boca ante tal actitud impositiva.

—La verdad es mentira y viceversa; lo bello es feo y viceversa; el olor cambia hacia lo opuesto, en otras palabras, el perfume no proviene de las flores sino de las cloacas; los niños, para ellos, no son la esperanza del mundo sino la desesperanza; las mujeres mientras menos atractivas luzcan, mejor, son más apetitosas; y…

—Por favor, no sigas —lo interrumpí—, porque me duele la cabeza y empiezo a sentirme mareado. 

Tras mis palabras, un silencio inusual irrumpió entre nosotros hasta que dije:

—¿Y de dónde han venido esa gente tan horrible de que hablas?

—De un planeta gemelo a la Tierra, pero con una composición opuesta a la nuestra. Todo al revés. 

—¿Y cómo llegaron hasta aquí sin que nadie hable de ellos?

—Eso sí no lo sé. Pero el hecho es que están aquí, entre nosotros, con la intención de, como las partículas de materia y antimateria, al hacer contacto con nosotros, convertirnos en un espectro de luz perdido en la galaxia y el tiempo.

Me puse de pie. Mis nervios no resistieron más. Dije, de modo apresurado, que fue un placer volverlo a ver y conversar un rato. Un trueno lejano, aviso de tormenta, llegó en el momento preciso. 

—Nos veremos otro día — dije y me alejé con el corazón en los pies, abrumado de tanta carga negativa en busca, tal vez, de mi partícula positiva.
