Primera parte
Para mí, desde mis años de adolescencia, el asunto de cómo enfrentar los problemas difíciles comenzó a ser un misterio y prácticamente una obsesión. Todas las personas confrontarán serias dificultades de todo tipo en algunos momentos de sus vidas, pero cada cual piensa que su problema es único, muy grave o insoluble. Por supuesto, no todos reaccionan igual. Unos están mejor preparados que otros para encarar esos momentos complejos, espinosos y hasta desconcertantes.
Una vez, hace varios años, me vi sometido a una prueba de fuego cuando recibí una noticia que fue para mí paralizante. Esto ocurrió en una fase de mi vida muy compleja y estresante. No era nada relacionado con mi salud ni tampoco la de un familiar allegado, por suerte, sino algo muy diferente y que pudo ejercer un cambio radical muy desfavorable para mi vida futura. Fue una negativa categórica a una aspiración mía. No deseo relatar en detalle lo sucedido por razones poderosas que aconsejan no hacerlo. Este hecho se produjo delante de mi esposa, quien puso el grito en el cielo. Salimos del lugar donde se produjo el encuentro con el funcionario transmisor de la mala noticia, muy deprimidos y de pronto me detuve y dije: Nunca un No es definitivo. Nos fuimos a comer a un restaurante de la cocina italiana, muy apreciado por ambos, como si fuéramos a “celebrar” la mala nueva. Luego fuimos a otro lugar de esparcirmiento. No hablamos más del asunto ese día. Tampoco yo lo tomé como una sentencia concluyente y comencé a pensar cómo lograr revertir ese terrible no en un sí liberador. Así procedí y en un plazo de dos años más o menos ocurrió el milagro. Todo se resolvió de manera favorable.
Esto transformó mi visión y percepción de ver las cosas, las dificultades, las adversidades. A esto, más tarde, incorporé otro principio: aceptar la gente como es. Es decir, no tener falsas expectativas con las personas. Tratarlos con la visión y límites que ellos mismos imponen. Pero, cuidado, esto no implica que aceptemos y actuemos contra nuestros preceptos e intereses. No. Solamente tratarlos, bien alertas, como son y sin falsas expectativas. Esta visión y modo de actuar nos libera de frustraciones y emociones negativas. También incorporé, hace menos de un año, otro principio de vida después de ocurrir un hecho que llegué hasta pensar como demasiado pernicioso e insoportable: no preocuparme de las cosas y hechos fuera del alcance de mí poder. Lo que no podemos cambiar, aceptarlo e intentar de lidiar con ello de la mejor forma posible a nuestro alcance.
Ahora viene lo más interesante: En este mes de julio, 2021, vi un video en YouTube que hablaba de principios básicos del Estoicismo. Una filosofía originada en la antigua Grecia, período Helenístico (después de la muerte de Alejando el Grande en 323 ac hasta 146 ac) por Zenón de Citio (Zeno of Citium), su creador; luego siguieron Epicteto ( Epictetus), un ex esclavo; Marco Aurelio (Marcus Aurelius), emperador romano por veinte años, y quien fue el mayor contribuidor y difusor de esta filosofía, influenciado por Epicteto; Cicerón (Cicero), político y orador romano; Catón (Cato), político influyente romano; Séneca (Seneca), filósofo romano; entre otros. Descubrí la existencia de esta filosofía casualmente en el internet. Sí conocía el término estoico, pero nunca pensé estar relacionado, supongo, con la filosofía del estoicismo. En ese artículo y en otros relacionados con la misma filosofía comprobé que “mis tres principios” a los que arribé por mí mismo, ya habían sido enunciados y puestos en práctica desde milenios atrás. A continuación expongo algunos de los principios del Estoicismo:
1. Desechar todo aquello fuera de nuestro poder de decisión. Lo que no podemos controlar ni cambiar.
2. Los factores externos adversos no son los que limitan o determinan nuestras vidas, sino el modo de cómo los enfrentamos.
3. Enfocarnos en todo aquello no sujeto a poderes externos, sino a nuestro poder, a nuestra manera de actuar.
4. Mantener una actitud positiva ante los hechos y cosas de la vida. Nada es inevitable, excepto la muerte.
5. Percibir cada contratiempo o problema como un reto y no como un hecho insoluble, sin salida. Un desafío que debemos enfrentar con la convicción de salir victoriosos si nos mantenemos firmes y decididos a continuar adelante.
6. Fortalecer el espíritu porque de éste depende nuestro desempeño en la vida y hasta nuestra salud. “Lo que entra por el espíritu, sale por el cuerpo”, solía decir mi suegro. Analicemos de dónde procede la potencia de un yudoca, capaz de fraccionar como una hoja de papel una columna de bloques o ladrillos con el canto de la mano. De la fortaleza de su espíritu.
7. Nunca proyectarse como víctima. Esta actitud anula nuestro espíritu de lucha y las posibilidades de éxito.
8. Tratar a los demás como son. Esto evita falsas expectativas y elimina sentirnos frustrados.
9. Escoger bien los amigos. Ellos pueden ser un factor de gran importancia en nuestra vida o todo lo contrario.
10. Estar contento, satisfecho, con poco. La riqueza y la vida fastuosa no dan felicidad. Esto no disminuye o niega la importancia de lo material, pero nos libera de vivir obsesionados con tener más como si esto fuese nuestro objetivo final. “Ninguna persona tiene el poder de poseer todo cuanto desea, pero sí posee el poder de no desear lo que no tiene, y hacer buen uso y disfrutar de lo que tiene
